FARMER'S ACTION FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRO- BASED LIVELIHOOD- FASAL-2
Being implemented by: Swabhiman Samiti (SS) Supported by: Hindustan Unilever Foundation, Mumbai through PANI.
FASAL-2 Project is being implemented with the village of Uska Blockof district Siddharthnagar. This project is starts from Nov.2014. Improving water use efficiency in agriculture & promoting water seeking behavior in community & stake holders are main focus of this project. This project is supported by Hindustan Unilever Foundation through PANI sansthan Faizabad .
To improve the economic well-being of 26500 marginal farmers/households and help them achieve food security by practicing improved agriculture practices.
To enhance gross cropped area through availability of additional water.
To enhance production & productivity of major crops like cereals, pulses, vegetables, sugarcane & mentha.
To bring positive change in behavior of community towards water conservation.
To promote water saving practices/technologies in farming practices to save water.
To ensure the access of marginal farmers over govt. livelihood programs/ schemes through their mobilization and knowledge building
To promote integrated agro-based livelihood activities for marginal farmers.
The project aims to address the following major issues:
Loss of one crop due to flood.
Poor soil health condition.
Low cropping intensity due limited gross sown area.
Poor cropping pattern and low productivity of crops
Low income due to dependency on traditional agriculture.
Poor educational status & awareness about entitlements
Lack of collective initiatives for rights
Lack of skill in agro techniques & ignorance of new technologies
High use of chemical fertilizers/pesticides.
Exploitation of farmers in inputs sourcing & marketing of products.
Improper and inefficient use of water in agriculture.
Wastage of water.
Low productivity of water
Focussed activities of project:
Institution and capacity development- Formation and strengthening of SHGs/farmers collectives, their GP level federations, FARMER'S Resource Centres-FRC; capacity building in water management, leadership; capacity building of Community Resource Persons-CRPs , Activate water management committee, formation of water users groups
Crop improvement- trainings and associated demonstrations of different sustainable and water efficient practices to enhance crops yield (Cereals, Pulses, Sugarcane, Mentha, Vegetables etc.)
Tree farming on the farm bunds for fodder and fire wood
Specific interventions to address problem situations like saline soils/ flood affected area etc.
Facilitate convergence of MNREGA specifically for supportive activities
Soil health improvement through composting, green manuring, crop rotation etc
Conservation of natural resources with special focus on water conservation.
Water friendly POPs of Sugarcane, Mentha & Vegetables.
Demonstration & promotion of Pusa Hydrogel
Demonstration & promotion of drip irrigation
Demonstration & promotion of water friendly agriculture practices like mulching etc.
Approaches for water saving in Project are:

Farming on ridge & furrow
Using double row method/ bed method
Use mulching /Composting
Reduce water requirement through improved agronomic practices like-
Improve utilization/productivity of water (Per drop more crop) like -
Relay/overlapping cropping cycle (Potato/lahi + Onion + maize + Dhaincha)
Promotion of low water demanding crop/varieties like -
Sugarcane/Mentha area shift in other crop cereals or pulses.

Use of short duration/low water demanding varieties
Outcomes which project is aiming to achieve:
The project will save 73.51 MCM water. Which will also save energy (in the form of diesel) equivalent to Rs. 8.44 Cr which is required for lifting of 73.38 MCM water. Saving of above quantity of diesel also make significant impact on carbon footprint.
Project aims to make significant change in water use/saving behavior of 26500 Families which contributes for saving of water during project period & many years after the project
Bring 15000 acre area under water friendly/efficient agriculture technique/ practices.
28500 ton additional production of farm produce through enhanced productivity.
Marginal farmers of project areas will adopt new technology (technique/crop/varieties) demonstrated by project. It will increase productivity and improve soil health and also contribute towards the conservation of natural resources, especially water.
More marginal farmers will be able to access the benefits of various govt. schemes.
Increase farm income by 25-30% of 26500 marginal farmers/households by the end of year 2019.
